Is Benzodiazepines / CNS Depressants Safe with GABA?
Free · No account · based on published sources including NIH ODS, FDA drug labels, and peer-reviewed literature
Do not self-medicate with oral GABA supplements while taking prescribed benzodiazepines or other CNS depressants without physician approval. Be cautious with activities requiring alertness. Report unusual drowsiness or breathing changes to your doctor.
Why this interaction occurs
While oral GABA has limited direct CNS penetration, some evidence suggests peripheral and indirect central GABAergic modulation. Combined use with benzodiazepines, which directly enhance GABA-A receptor function, may produce additive sedation, respiratory depression risk, and enhanced CNS depression particularly at higher GABA doses.
Evidence
Evidence level: limited.
