Avoid taking silica or silicon-based beauty supplements at the same time as minocycline. Administer minocycline on an empty stomach and separate silica supplementation by at least 4 hours. If acne is not responding to treatment, discuss supplement timing with your dermatologist.
Why this interaction occurs
Like other tetracycline-class antibiotics, minocycline is susceptible to chelation by polyvalent minerals including silicon compounds. Concurrent administration reduces minocycline's GI absorption, diminishing its antibacterial efficacy against Cutibacterium acnes in acne therapy.
Evidence
Evidence level: moderate.
