Avoid combining high-dose beta-alanine with taurine supplementation in patients with cardiovascular disease or those taking antihypertensive medications. Stagger doses by at least 2 hours if both are prescribed.
Why this interaction occurs
Beta-alanine and taurine share the same cellular transporter (TauT/SLC6A6). High-dose beta-alanine supplementation competitively inhibits taurine uptake into cardiac and skeletal muscle. Taurine plays a critical role in regulating intracellular calcium and cardiac contractility. Taurine depletion in cardiac tissue can increase arrhythmia susceptibility and impair blood pressure regulation, particularly concerning in patients on antihypertensives where cardiac reserve may already be reduced.
Evidence
Evidence level: moderate.
Reported safety data
The FDA’s adverse event reporting system (FAERS) has received 79,450 reports mentioning Beta Alanine. This reflects reported cases involving the medication in general — not confirmed causation, and not specific to the Beta Alanine + supplement combination on this page.
FAERS reports are voluntary and cannot prove that a drug caused an event. Do not use report counts to assess the safety of this specific drug-supplement pair.
