Is Zinc Safe with Vitamin D3?

Zinc at recommended doses (8-11 mg/day) can be taken alongside Vitamin D3 without concern. Ensure zinc intake is adequate as deficiency may impair Vitamin D receptor expression and bone building.
Why this interaction occurs
Zinc is required for normal Vitamin D receptor (VDR) function and expression in osteoblasts. Zinc deficiency has been shown to reduce VDR binding capacity, thereby diminishing the bone-anabolic effects of Vitamin D3. Additionally, Vitamin D3 facilitates intestinal zinc absorption. This is primarily a synergistic and supportive interaction; however, excessive zinc supplementation above 40 mg/day can paradoxically impair bone metabolism and interfere with copper absorption.
Evidence
Evidence level: moderate.
Reported safety data
The FDA’s adverse event reporting system (FAERS) has received 708,274 reports mentioning Vitamin D3. This reflects reported cases involving the medication in general — not confirmed causation, and not specific to the Vitamin D3 + supplement combination on this page.
FAERS reports are voluntary and cannot prove that a drug caused an event. Do not use report counts to assess the safety of this specific drug-supplement pair.
