Is Probiotics Safe with Amoxicillin?

Take probiotics at least 2 hours apart from Amoxicillin during the treatment course and continue for 4 weeks post-treatment. Look for strains such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or Saccharomyces boulardii which have evidence for antibiotic-associated diarrhea prevention.
Why this interaction occurs
Amoxicillin disrupts the intestinal microbiota, increasing risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and Clostridioides difficile overgrowth. Concurrent probiotic use (with appropriate timing) has been shown in multiple RCTs to reduce the incidence of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
Evidence
Evidence level: strong.
Reported safety data
The FDA’s adverse event reporting system (FAERS) has received 115,001 reports mentioning Amoxicillin. This reflects reported cases involving the medication in general — not confirmed causation, and not specific to the Amoxicillin + supplement combination on this page.
FAERS reports are voluntary and cannot prove that a drug caused an event. Do not use report counts to assess the safety of this specific drug-supplement pair.
