Is Zinc (Zinc Sulfate/Gluconate) Safe with Rabeprazole?
Free · No account · based on published sources including NIH ODS, FDA drug labels, and peer-reviewed literature
Take zinc supplements at least 1 hour before rabeprazole. Monitor for signs of zinc deficiency (impaired wound healing, hair loss, taste disturbances) with long-term PPI use. Zinc picolinate or zinc gluconate may offer marginally better absorption in low-acid conditions.
Why this interaction occurs
Zinc ionization and absorption in the duodenum and jejunum is partially dependent on an acidic gastric environment. Rabeprazole-induced hypochlorhydria reduces zinc solubility from food and supplements. Additionally, zinc competes with other divalent cations whose dysregulation under PPI therapy can further complicate absorption dynamics.
Evidence
Evidence level: moderate.
Reported safety data
The FDA’s adverse event reporting system (FAERS) has received 24,791 reports mentioning Rabeprazole. This reflects reported cases involving the medication in general — not confirmed causation, and not specific to the Rabeprazole + supplement combination on this page.
FAERS reports are voluntary and cannot prove that a drug caused an event. Do not use report counts to assess the safety of this specific drug-supplement pair.
