Is CoQ10 Safe with Risperidone?
Free · No account · based on published sources including NIH ODS, FDA drug labels, and peer-reviewed literature
CoQ10 is generally safe alongside risperidone. Standard supplemental doses (100–200 mg/day) are well tolerated. Discuss with your provider, particularly if you have cardiovascular risk factors or are experiencing fatigue and metabolic side effects from risperidone.
Why this interaction occurs
Antipsychotics including risperidone have been associated with increased oxidative stress markers and mitochondrial dysfunction in neuronal tissue. CoQ10 serves as an endogenous antioxidant and may theoretically mitigate some of these effects. Evidence is primarily from in vitro and small observational studies. No significant pharmacokinetic interaction has been identified between risperidone and CoQ10.
Evidence
Evidence level: limited.
Reported safety data
The FDA’s adverse event reporting system (FAERS) has received 63,944 reports mentioning Risperidone. This reflects reported cases involving the medication in general — not confirmed causation, and not specific to the Risperidone + supplement combination on this page.
FAERS reports are voluntary and cannot prove that a drug caused an event. Do not use report counts to assess the safety of this specific drug-supplement pair.
