Is Potassium supplements Safe with Prednisone?

Monitor serum potassium levels regularly when taking prednisone, especially if also using diuretics. Potassium supplementation may be needed, but levels should be guided by blood tests rather than self-supplementing without medical supervision.
Why this interaction occurs
Glucocorticoids such as prednisone have mineralocorticoid activity that promotes renal potassium excretion, increasing the risk of hypokalemia. This risk is compounded when potassium-losing diuretics are co-administered. Potassium supplementation can partially offset this loss, but improper dosing without monitoring can lead to under- or over-correction.
