Avoid unless prescribed and monitored. Check potassium.
Why this interaction occurs
Valsartan inhibits the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), reducing potassium elimination by the kidneys. Concurrent potassium supplementation compounds this effect, increasing the risk of hyperkalemia. The risk is amplified in elderly patients, those with chronic kidney disease, or those taking NSAIDs or potassium-sparing diuretics.
Evidence
Evidence level: strong.

Reported safety data
The FDA’s adverse event reporting system (FAERS) has received 76,610 reports mentioning Valsartan. This reflects reported cases involving the medication in general — not confirmed causation, and not specific to the Valsartan + supplement combination on this page.
FAERS reports are voluntary and cannot prove that a drug caused an event. Do not use report counts to assess the safety of this specific drug-supplement pair.
