Separate Enalapril and iron supplement doses by a minimum of 2 hours. If you are prescribed iron therapy for anemia, alert your prescribing physician so blood pressure management can be monitored accordingly.
Why this interaction occurs
Co-administration of ferrous sulfate with Enalapril has been shown to significantly decrease Enalapril bioavailability due to metal-drug chelation in the GI lumen. Reduced plasma Enalapril levels may compromise antihypertensive and cardioprotective outcomes.
Evidence
Evidence level: strong.
