Is Vitamin D Safe with Voriconazole?
Free · No account · based on published sources including NIH ODS, FDA drug labels, and peer-reviewed literature
Monitor vitamin D levels regularly during long-term voriconazole therapy. Do not self-initiate high-dose vitamin D supplementation without physician oversight. Report bone pain, tenderness, or swelling to your healthcare provider promptly.
Why this interaction occurs
Voriconazole inhibits CYP24A1, the enzyme responsible for catabolism of vitamin D metabolites, which can lead to accumulation of active vitamin D compounds. Additionally, long-term voriconazole is associated with fluorosis and periostitis, conditions that can be complicated by vitamin D dysregulation. High-dose vitamin D supplementation may exacerbate hypervitaminosis D risk in this context.
Evidence
Evidence level: moderate.
