Is Vitamin E Safe with Apixaban?
Free · No account · based on published sources including NIH ODS, FDA drug labels, and peer-reviewed literature
Do not exceed 400 IU/day of vitamin E while taking apixaban. Doses above 800 IU/day are contraindicated with anticoagulant therapy. Routine dietary intake is safe; only supplemental high-dose use is a concern.
Why this interaction occurs
Pharmacological doses of vitamin E inhibit platelet adhesion and aggregation and have demonstrated mild anticoagulant properties by interfering with vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. Although apixaban does not depend on the vitamin K pathway, the additive antiplatelet effect of high-dose vitamin E combined with Factor Xa inhibition may increase the risk of minor to moderate bleeding.
